The Nikonos (I), introduced in August 1963, was Nikon's first model in a popular series of 35mm amphibious film cameras designed for both underwater and all-weather photography. It was based on the earlier Calypso camera design by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Jean de Wouters, with Nikon acquiring the manufacturing rights and improving the design.
The Nikonos I was highly regarded for its robust construction and reliability in harsh environments, from the ocean depths to the jungles of the Vietnam War, and became a very popular tool for professional and amateur photographers alike. It was produced until 1968, when it was succeeded by the Nikonos II.
